Forest Bathing with Furry Friends: A Breath of Fresh Air for Windborne Wisdom & Leadership Lessons
When the question came up about how to spice up our digital Windborne Wisdom community, the answer was clear: we needed to break free from the screen and dive headfirst into nature. A digital detox wasn’t enough; we needed to immerse ourselves in the natural world, to experience the magic of forest bathing.
Why forest bathing, you ask? Well, because we take inspiration from nature to solve complex business and people problems. No surprises then that our logo is the humble tumbleweed - a symbol of resilience and renewal. It roams the land, scattering seeds of wisdom and inspiration wherever it goes. Together, we’re building a network of support and understanding, helping to alleviate the pangs of loneliness that often plague leaders, managers, entrepreneurs and consultants.
Leading the Pack, Not Being Dragged Along
Enter my furry friends — 2 not-my-dog American Bullies on leashes: As I navigated the lush winding trails, I couldn’t help but draw parallels between ordinary walking-the-dogs and leading a team of humans. It turns out, both roles require a delicate balance of firmness, patience and understanding.
One of my not-my-dogs, a ball of boundless energy, was constantly tugging at the leash, eager to explore every nook and cranny. It was a bit like managing a team member who’s always brimming with ideas and ready to take charge. While their enthusiasm is admirable, it’s important to guide their energy in a productive direction.
On the other hand, my more “master of zen” not-my-dog preferred a more leisurely pace. He was content to amble along, soaking up the sights and sounds of the forest. This reminded me of those team members who are more methodical and prefer a steady, consistent approach.
Lessons from the Woods
- Embrace Diversity: These two puppies, siblings from the same litter, couldn’t be more different. They’re like yin and yang, chalk and cheese, but they work together seamlessly. A reminder that diversity isn’t just about race or gender; it’s about different perspectives, different strengths and different approaches.
- The Power of Patience: Some team members need a little more guidance, a little more patience. Others are ready to sprint ahead. It’s up to the leader to balance these different paces and provide the right level of support.
- The Magic of Synergy: When the energy of the leader and the follower align, it’s a beautiful thing. It’s like a dance, a harmonious flow.
- The Importance of Recognition: A simple “good job” can go a long way. Positive reinforcement is key to motivating and inspiring your team.
So, the next time you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed, consider taking a walk. It’s a simple yet powerful way to recharge your batteries and gain a fresh perspective. Who knows, you might even discover a new leadership insight or two.
