Lost in the Woods: A Very Serious Leadership Lesson
So, I did a very serious thing. I went for a walk along one of our infamous greenbelts. Very serious. I mean, it wasn’t like I was scaling Mount Everest or anything, but it was serious business.
I took two highly-trained (not — lol!), extremely intelligent American Bullies with me. One, a whirlwind of energy, was so excited she could barely contain herself. She was pulling me in every direction, like a toddler on a sugar rush. The other, a more laid-back fellow, seemed to be in a perpetual state of zen. He was content to meander at his own pace, stopping to smell every single blade of grass.
It was a masterclass in leadership, let me tell you. At first, I let the energetic one lead the way. I thought, “I’ll just follow her lead so she can burn off the pent up energy.” Big mistake. I quickly found myself being dragged through the undergrowth, dodging low-hanging branches, tripping over roots and digging my heels into the ground to hold her back. It was like being a leaf in a hurricane.
I’m no stranger to the role of pack leader in dog world. I know that a strong leader doesn’t just go with the flow. I got my dog-love from my Dad and I’m comfy to call it a gift, but I digress. Pack leaders guide the flow. So, I took charge, with all the authority of a seasoned commander. I calmly asserted my role and miraculously (not), the chaos subsided. It was like switching from a chaotic startup to a well-oiled machine.
Now, I’m not saying I’m the next great leadership guru. But I did learn a valuable lesson that day: a good leader doesn’t just react to chaos, they prevent it.
So, the next time you find yourself being pulled in a million different directions, remember the wisdom of the woods. Take a deep breath, assert your role as a member of the team (curiosity, deep listening, calm assertiveness gets you over that line) and guide your team towards a more peaceful and productive future.
Want to Join the Fun?
I’m so inspired by this experience that I want to share it with you. I’m organising guided walks, with or without furry friends. It’s a great opportunity to connect with nature, clear your head, excercise and maybe even learn a thing or two about leadership.
